non-fiction stories

I'm a first grade teacher, so needless to say; my days are filled with lots of excitement and many funny quotes, I'll share the ones I remember here.

My students were supposed to write a story problem about money today, one that coild be solved by a classmate. Here is my favorite;

"A boy had som muny it was 53 cents he spendid it on a peach the peach was good."

I've been teaching middle school reading in the morning (for grad school hours) and my first graders in the afternoon... this week's quotes: 8th grader: "I think Dr. King and Rosa Parks are heroes, and Dr. Drew from celebrity rehab." First Grader: " I know sometimes I lie about this so that I don't have to do subtraction, but this time I think I might really throw up."......two very funny worlds :)

After reading a book about gorillas (and one that knows sign-language;
Me:So what is a reason gorillas might need to be protected?

Student:Well, if you were living with your parents in the jungle and you were really bored, cuz they don't talk to you about anything interesting, you could go into the jungle and instead of making an ape ma
d, you could just teach it sign language so you would have something to do.

Me:huh

After reading a story about a little girl and what she does to stay healthy, I ask one of my little friends;

"So _____, what do you do to stay healthy?"

Student: "Well, sometimes I go for hikes in the mountains....but with my coat on because its winter. And other times, I just go and spend some times with the elderlies."

Me: "Ok, that sounds interesting."
